We have to remember though that it's the freak thunderstorms that cause all the anxiety in our beloved family pets. Then you have the tornado warnings that will gray anyone's hair. Oklahoma is considered the hail Mecca to most. We have a storm almost every year that does hundreds of millions in damage. And if we have a large tornado barrel through. The outcome can be even worse. The meteorologist in our state has been hard at work trying to figure out new ways to help us Okies stay weather alert and keep us forewarned in the case a twister was to be a concern on a stormy day. There are many ways for them to warn us. The city of Oklahoma City has a warning system that will sound the sirens in the counties that are in harm's way. But, is it soon enough to avoids the perils of an ef5 tornado. We sure hope so. However, Tornadoes can develop at any given time when there is a decent amount of inflow on the hook of a severe storm. We can't predict that it will happen. But, warnings are there and should be taken seriously. We see too many people out and about on a warned day of severe weather in Oklahoma. People need to take this serious and not fool around. We have seen what carnage a strong storm can do. Residents in Moore Oklahoma will attest that it is a scary situation to be in. The warning is there for a reason.
But what about all the hail damage. There's no warning for that. No heads up, just a chance on the weather 5-day forecast from our local news stations. Which, are usually wrong due to the indifferent weather systems we see in the Soon state. But Oklahomans know that a hail storm is a chance of getting their property damaged and having to deal with their insurance company. Which is not an easy feat. Not a fun one. The insurance companies are getting to the point where if it is cosmetic damage, they won't cover it and let you deal with Paying for something That is a hassle. Hail damage is a major pain for a lot of people at once. The roofers, window installers, gutter guys, and paintless dent repair shops see a big influx in business at once and it frustrating for them.l because everyone wants to have repairs done once and don't realize that it's not that simple in most cases. Unless you self-insure of course. But, for most that are not an option. Insurance carriers will fight you tooth and nail to try and get out of paying for the damages that clearly came from storm-related occurrences. Hold your ground and you will be fine. It's when they start to try bullying the claimant that things get hairy. No one deserves to be shamed for the coverage that they pay for. It's an atrocity that some people. Are bullied so bad that they give up and help their insurance provider a lot of money.
A Large area can be affected by the storms. People get caught off guard and sometimes they aren't even home. Like the massive storms that can through newscaster and more in 2013 that took out a lot of property and claimed the lives of the poor souls that were either at work, school, or trying to get to their loved ones. It was a surprise storm that was bein watched. However, the storm along I-40 was the main storm that was of urgency. Luckily it dissipated. But then the Newcastle storm grew and all hell broke loose.
That is why the storms in Oklahoma must be taken seriously. They can change lives forever and be so unpredictable that you could get caught in one and no options but to ride it out. With the national weather center based in Norman, Oklahoma. We have a pretty good advantage to predicting what the weather is going to do and when it will act up. Everyone has got to stay alerted to the ever changing weather in our state to keep ahead of the dangers associated with severe weather. News channels and warnings from their respective apps are a good thing to utilize when going into storm season in the Midwest. We see too many distractions as it is in the modern day. We also have the responsibility to help the elderly and those that may not be so technologically savvy stay aware as well.
We talked to a few residents about their experiences with severe weather and they wanted to share with you a little advice. Our first is Britni, she was home on May 15, 2013, and was busy like the rest of us. She explains " I was just getting home from Walmart and had a load of groceries I was unloading and my phone started blowing up with severe weather alerts. I went to my car grabbed my purse and then was listening to the wind as it picked up and was getting louder and louder. The weather app I have said that a tornado was possible in the area and I should take cover. I dashed to the bedroom and grabbed my dogs and headed to the safe room in our garage. I was frightened and decided that I should call my husband. The phones signals were starting to have interference. As soon as my dogs and I were in the storm room we heard what sounded like a train coming. The garage doors were starting to shake violently. I had never been in this type of situation before and was starting to freak out a little. My dogs were scared and we knew the storm was right over us. I started to see insulation fall through the vent on top of the safe-room and then I heard a car horn going off as the wind and violent noise died down. I was not able to get the safe room door open at this time. But, all that mattered was that we were ok. I heard a voice outside the safe room that was asking I was Okay and able to breathe. I was yelling back at them that I was Okay. The firemen on the other side were able to get the door open after clearing the debris. They helped me out of the mess and I realized that the house was gone. there were a few walls standing but when I looked around. Everything looked like it had been through a blender. The entire neighborhood was wiped out. We have literally only lived in our new house for one and a half years.
I finally got ahold of my husband that had been trying frantically to reach me but all phone systems were down. We made it through I said. But, our home is demolished.
A week later the home we built not so long ago was a dirt pad ready to be started over. We counted our blessings and realized that we had made the right choice to have a safe room and prayed, everyone else in the wake of the storm was as lucky as we were. If it was not for the warnings and the safe room we had built I may not have been here to tell this story today. Stay aware when the weather starts getting wild and help others that may not be as lucky to have all the warnings.
